Cattle Calling: The Neale Family’s Journey
To enhance consumer education and highlight the people who raise cattle, the Beef Checkoff’s docuseries, “Cattle Calling,” released a new episode on Light Hill Meats. Nestled in the hills of Middle Tennessee, first-generation cattle farmers Ben and Lauren Neale share their journey of starting from the ground up. While raising four busy kids, one of whom has special needs, the Neales still find time to manage their growing farm and serve their community by opening a local processing facility and store – a true farm-to-table story.
The Beef Checkoff program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States may retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
