Joanne "Jo" Stanko is a cow-calf operator in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and was appointed to the Beef Board by the Secretary of Agriculture in 2014. She and her husband, Jim, bought their ranch in 1975 and began with a grain, hay, cow-calf and yearling operation but converted to strictly hay and cow-calf in the 1980s. Jo has been extremely active in agricultural organizations, including service as co-chair of the Yampa Valley Agriculture Foundation's board; as president and vice president of the Colorado CattleWomen; as treasurer of the local Farm Bureau; as a member of the Colorado Ag Commission, Colorado Cattlemen, the American National CattleWomen; U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance; and Farmer's Union. Jo also is founder of the Yampa Valley Community Agriculture Alliance; a 10-year 4-H leader and volunteer for the 4-H Scholarship Foundation. She holds a master's degree in education and an administrative certificate beyond that. She previously worked 30 years as an educator and vice principal, and has been active in local and state organizations including the League of Women Voters, the Colorado Education Association, the American Association of University Women, and the Beta Sigma Phi sorority.
