Michael Smith was born and raised on a commercial cow-calf operation in the Rogue River Valley of southwestern Oregon. He now lives with his wife, Sara, and two children, in Visalia, California, where he is special projects manager for Harris Ranch. In addition to the feeding operation, Michael is an almond grower. He holds a bachelor's degree in animal science from Cal Poly and a master's degree in animal science from Oklahoma State University. He has been active in volunteer service to the beef industry through the years, including service on the California Beef Council, the California Cattle Feeder Council, the California Cattlemen's Association, and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. Prior to beginning his work with Harris Ranch in 2004, Michael served in a number of other agricultural jobs, including technical services director for AgProfessional, LLC, assistant director of Quality Assurance for the national Beef Checkoff Program, as a research and teaching assistant at Colorado State University, and as a technical services director for the Colorado Cattle Feeder's Association.
