Doug and Linda Hodorff, Wisconsin
Doug and Linda Hodorff operate dairies in both Wisconsin and Nebraska. Second-Look Holsteins in Eden, Wis., where the family has farmed since the 1870s, is an 800-cow partnership with their son, Corey and daughter-in-law, Tammy. Broken Bow Dairy, located in Milburn, Neb., has 400 cows. They raise heifers for both dairies in Nebraska.
Doug and Linda embrace new approaches to dairying and to breeding productive Holstein and Jersey cows — from genetics to animal identification. And, they count on their beef checkoff investments to help.
For example, the Hodorffs appreciate checkoff research that discovers innovative, new beef dishes like the Flat Iron steak. “The Flat Iron is easy to prepare and grill, and has a nice flavor. Consumers love this new chuck cut, which means that our cows are worth more when they leave the dairy,” says Doug.
Doug and Linda also respect the way the checkoff helps increase dairy-beef demand through in-store promotions and the “BEEF... It’s What’s for Dinner” campaign. “We hear this catchy phrase repeated a lot when we’re at social gatherings with friends and neighbors, in casual conversations not related to farming,” say the Hodorffs.
As dairy producers, the Hodorffs also see value in the beef checkoff’s support of programs like Dairy Beef Quality Assurance. Linda says, “Our state beef council is working to help keep dairy producers informed about the latest management practices so we can provide consumers with safe, wholesome beef products.”
Doug says there are additional profit opportunities for dairy producers who focus more on the beef they sell. “Dairy producers should treat the cows they sell like weigh-up cows — adding body condition to make sure we don’t leave dollars on the table.”
Doug and Linda also see the beef checkoff as a vehicle to help dairy and beef producers work together to provide consumers a safe, wholesome beef eating experience.
