Another National Retail Beef Backer Award Winner!

Date: Friday, February 29, 2008

Suggested Lead: The Beef Checkoff Program recently announced the winners of the first annual national Retail Beef Backer® Awards program. The Independent Category award winner, Foodmaster Supermarkets, based in Chelsea, Mass., was another of three named for their commitment to outstanding beef marketing and merchandising programs. The Independent Category is a retail chain with less than 11 stores. John Crummins, meat director of operations, says the award is an honor…tape.

Cut #1                :22                   O.C..."comfortable eating beef."

Another judging criteria was the retailers’ tie-ins with beef checkoff-funded programs and promotions. Crummins explains some of the activities and promotions held at Foodmaster retail stores last year...tape.

Cut #2               :18                    O.C..."of the cut."

Crummins says working with the beef checkoff through in-store promotions only helps their bottom line and keeps consumers coming back for beef…tape.

Cut #3               :20                    O.C..."comfortable buying it."

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
