Gather ‘Round the Dinner Table with Beef

Suggested Lead: Scott George is a dairy producer from Cody, Wy., and chair of the checkoff’s youth education and information subcommittee. He says as the 2007-08 school year draws to a close, parents must not forget about sitting down together at the family dinner table, even during the busy summer months. To aid the learning process, the beef checkoff works diligently with government and school administrators to create educational kits that teach children, and parents, about beef…tape

As a producer, George believes that the checkoff youth nutrition efforts directly benefit his operation today. But not only that, they will benefit generations of beef producers to come…tape.

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
