The checkoff’s Veal Quality Assurance (VQA) program articulates the veal community’s commitment to producing safe food that is raised responsibly. It provides customers and consumers with assurances that the veal they purchase is raised using the best practices and guidelines established by animal-care and food-safety experts. Organizations like the Food Marketing Institute and National Restaurant Association use the program to provide their members with information about today’s veal. Ensuring that your farm is VQA-certified is important to sharing veal’s positive story. The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
