Setting Stage for Expansion

Most conversations between ag producers these days typically start with, “How much rain did you or didn’t you receive?” Mother Nature holds the keys to any real beef cattle herd expansion plans producers might have to start the next phase of the “cattle cycle”. Some believe the cattle cycle of the past is no longer valid due to alternative land uses, life style choices, capital requirements for entry and obtaining sufficient returns on capital invested. These reasons are valid and likely to keep us from seeing the 2007 inventory highs again, but Mother Nature is the primary means to reversing the current down trend in total cattle numbers.
