World Food Azerbaijan allows a unique access to the Caspian region’s meat buyers. With that in mind, the beef checkoff helped fund a U.S. beef booth to the more than 5,000 food-industry professionals at the World Food Azerbaijan, a growing market for U.S. beef. Through April, imports of U.S. beef in Azerbaijan were up 70 percent in volume and 124 percent in value to $7.65 million vs. a year earlier.
The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
