Texas Rancher Takes Cattlemen’s Beef Board Reins
Contact: , 402-856-2097;
Suggested Lead: It’s only fitting that after an eventful week in San Antonio, Texas, at the Cattle Industry Annual Convention, Texas rancher Dan Dierschke joins the ranks of many across the country elected by fellow cattlemen and women to serve as Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB) chair. And in typical fashion, we asked the incoming chairman what he sees as the biggest challenge facing the beef industry…tape
Cut #1 :30 O.C...”speak for ourselves”
Being on the front lines, Dan has first-hand experience in witnessing the accountability of the checkoff and those who lead it. He trusts that the checkoff is managed well and wants farmers and ranchers to know that their leaders are doing what they feel is best for the future of the industry…tape
Cut #2 :22 O.C...”the bottom line”
Dan says he has three goals as chairman: 1) develop an effective response to the increasing demands of the anti-animal use activists, 2) continue to use checkoff investments to build beef demand, and 3) reduce counter-productive arguments within the industry and stress our common goals. Dan expands on his last point for us…tape.
Cut #3 :22 O.C...”impact all of us”
Dan emphasizes that the checkoff belongs to everyone who invests in it and the success of the program is dependent upon these people taking ownership and directing it to those activities that increase the bottom line …tape.
Cut #4 :33 O.C...”volunteer their time”

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
