Sonoma Style

The finalists have been selected, and 15 home cooks are looking forward to competing in the 2009 National Beef Cook-Off in Sonoma, Calif., where one of them will win a $25,000 cash prize. Finalists for the Sept. 23 cook-off will be asked to showcase their original “Sonoma-Style” beef recipes, which were selected from a pool of about 2,400 entries. The recipe-selection team for the event met in late April to “paper-screen” the entries and identify the 50 recipes that best met judging criteria for taste, healthfulness and nutritional balance, and convenient preparation and cooking. The panel then met the following week at the checkoff-funded Culinary Center in Chicago to taste, rate and rank those 50 recipes and advance the top 15 to the competition. Six finalists for a professional chef category will be selected in July. For details about the biennial contest, go to National Beef Cook-Off.
