Suggested Lead:  Our final report in the series of foreign marketing updates comes from Joel Haggard, senior vice president, Asia-Pacific region for the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF), contractor to the Beef Checkoff Program. Haggard says there has been a lot of talk about consumer sensitivity and resistance in the Korean, Taiwan and Japanese markets for U.S. beef. However, he remains positive about the opportunities that exist for 2010…tape

Cut #1               :16                   O.C...”is generally positive”

Haggard says a market to watch is Indonesia…tape

Cut #2                :28                     O.C…”imports are rising”

Japan is growing by double digits for U.S. beef exports but the China market isn’t open as of current. Haggard says Chinese consumers like marbled, grain-fed beef which provides an excellent opportunity for U.S. beef exports, once market access is gained…tape

Cut #3                :26                   O.C...”if we get access”

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
