Suggested Lead:  We recently caught up with Chad Russell, regional director for Mexico, Central America and the Dominican Republic for the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF), contractor to the Beef Checkoff Program, and he says though Mexico has been being a number one export market in the past in terms of volume and value, muscle cuts and variety meats have declined 28 percent from a year ago, due to a number of economic factors and drought…tape

Cut #1               :23                   O.C...”the Mexican peso”

Russell says supermarkets in Mexico are the primary channel through which U.S. beef if is sold to the end consumer. He details a few of the things USMEF, through beef checkoff funding, is doing to help move beef in the Mexican market…tape

Cut #2               1:04                   O.C...”U.S. meat section”

The Central American market is a new territory for USMEF and they continue to explore challenges and opportunities for exports to that market. Russell points out that there seems to be more upward potential in Central America, especially in Panama.

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
