Suggested Lead:  Don Stewart, Cattlemen’s Beef Board member, importer from Highland Park, Ill., and vice chair of the industry’s Global Consumer Marketing group, gets a few odd questions from time to time, but one he receives quite often is, “You’re an importer. Why do importers serve on the Beef Board and why do importers pay the checkoff?” Don says he’s “in the meat business”, and, his interest in the beef checkoff is the promotion of our product so we are first of mind to our consumers, our customers…tape

Cut #1               :29                   O.C...”biggest thing we do”

Stewart and his fellow importers do contribute a significant portion of the beef checkoff…tape

Cut #2               :19                   O.C...”as the states do”

So the last tough question is:  the meat that importers are bringing in, does that compete with the cattle farmers and ranchers are raising here in the U.S.?…tape.

Cut #3                :24                  O.C...”U.S. consumer’s demand”

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
