Suggested Lead: As many have probably heard, the Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB) has been involved in discussions throughout the summer regarding potential improvements to the Beef Checkoff Program. CBB officers have traveled across the country to meet with various industry organizations in an effort to develop and recommend changes to the Beef Promotion and Research Act and Order. The end of August marked the cutoff for ideas to be shared with the Beef Board. Tom Ramey, Cattlemen’s Beef Board (CBB) CEO, gives us an update on the process…tape.
The next step is to summarize all the suggestions and present them to the Administrative Subcommittee at a meeting Sept. 28-29 in Chicago. These suggestions will be further refined in October and the recommendations will be made to the Executive committee by end of October. At the beginning of December, a draft of recommendations will be presented to the full Beef Board and the Secretary of Agriculture. Ramey explains how long the process “could” take for these changes to be implemented…tape.
A burning question among producers is: “What kind of changes have these organizations come up with?” Ramey gives us an overview of some of the suggested changes...tape.

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
