Dairy Producer Honored – Jim Docheff, Diamond D Dairy from Longmont, Colo., was recently honored with the national Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) award, created to recognize outstanding beef and dairy producers from across the country who incorporate BQA principles as part of the day-to-day activities on their operations. The winners were selected based upon their commitment to beef quality assurance while operating sustainable cattle operations. Veal Takes on Chicago – As part of its “Go to Market” strategy, the beef checkoff-funded veal program recently held a cooking competition in Chicago for top U.S. chefs, challenging them to develop original veal dishes using several new veal cuts. The competition was held at the Kendall College veal arena and marks the third year for the competition, officially titled, “The Battle for Chicago,” – the 2008 Veal Celebrity Chef Showdown. The overall formal judging winner was Chef Bob Schafer – Creative Culinary Consultants for their Cowboy Osso Buco. For more information about checkoff-funded veal programs, go to www.vealstore.com.

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
