Suggested Lead: Tom Ramey, Cattlemen’s Beef Board CEO, along with members of the Operating Committee – which includes 10 members of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board and 10 directors from the Federation of State Beef Councils – spent several days with state beef council executives to develop strategies for investing the limited checkoff dollars in the most efficient manner possible in Fiscal 2009. Out of that came some very difficult decisions in order to cut back without eliminating the checkoff’s effectiveness in any particular area…tape

 Cut #1                :38                   O.C..."dollars of reduction."

Now that they’ve come this far, Ramey explains the process ahead of them that must take place before the next fiscal year which begins on October 1…tape

Cut #2               :39                    O.C..."begins Oct. 1."

Ramey also explains that industry partnerships are vital in order to stretch the dollar as far as possible…tape.

Cut #3               :34                    O.C..."dairy checkoff program."

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
