Lyle Peterson owns and operates a ranch in eastern Montana, and has long been involved in beef and agricultural organizations. He is a founding member of the U.S. Cattlemen's Association and former director of the Montana Cattlemen's Association, in addition to maintaining membership in the Southeastern Stockgrowers Association, Montana Stockgrowers Association, Farmers Union, and the Montana Grain Growers Association. Lyle also served as a director on the USDA Farm Services County Committee for eight years.
