Vaughn is a third-generation beef producer from northwestern South Dakota. Along with his wife, Lois, and son, Jeffrey, he manages a purebred Angus and Red Angus cattle operation, diversified with a dry-land farming operation that primarily produces feed for the cow-calf operation. Vaughn earned his bachelor's degree in animal science from South Dakota State University and served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Medical Corps, after which he and his wife became partners with his parents in the ranching operation near Reva. He has been involved extensively in ag organizations, including South Dakota Stockgrowers, R-CALF, the U.S. Cattlemen's Association, the American Angus Association, the Black Hills Angus Association, and the South Dakota Beef Industry Council. Vaughn also is a Masonic member of Pasque Lodge 214 and the West River Shriners Club.
