Harland is a cow-calf producer in LaFayette, Illinois, where she and her husband, A.J., also raise corn, soybeans, oats and turnips. She is a graduate of Bradley University and previously taught high-school English for 15 years. Their small farm in eastern Knox County has been in the Harland family since 1837 and is designated as a Sesquicentennial Farm. Together with seven other beef producers in the state, Jeanne and A.J. helped create Illinois Crown Beef, a branded beef company, recognized by Illinois Treasurer Judy Barr Topinka for “Innovative Entrepreneurship” in 2003. Jeanne serves on the Knox County Board of Health and a is member of the Knox Ag Roundtable. Her “Taste of Illinois Beef” column appears in the Galesburg Register Mail and other Gatehouse publications. In addition to working full-time on the farm, Jeanne serves as the legislative chair of Extension Partners, a statewide organization supporting the programs of the University of Illinois Extension. She was a founding member of the organization and previously served as its president. Jeanne also served several years as product promotion chair and continues to act as a spokesperson for the Illinois Beef Association. She was president of the Illinois CattleWomen for several years, during which time she was a member of the beef checkoff’s Joint Nutrition and Health Committee. She also chaired the Human Nutrition and Food Safety Working Group for the Council on Food and Agricultural Research for eight years and now sits on the Council’s research committee.
