Dean graduated from Iowa State University with his Bachelor of Science degree in Farm Operations. He and his wife, Jena, have a daughter, Reagan. He is a member of the First Presbyterian Church and president of the Twin Lakes Restoration Association. He is the current county president of the Iowa Soybean Association and Iowa Corn Growers Association and past state director and Ag Policy Committee chair of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association.
