Gary Sharp served six years as a member of the Cattlemen's Beef Board, from 2001 to 2007 and, after a four-year hiatus, was nominated and appointed to start another term in 2012. Gary and his wife, Donna, also a former Beef Board member, have been very active both in the dairy and beef industries. They operate Sharp's Inc. with their sons and families, milking 100 Holsteins, plus backgrounding beef steers and heifers, farming 1,700 acres, selling and custom raising breeding cattle, and operating a feedlot. Gary also is a nationally licensed livestock appraiser, and is a veteran 1st Lieutenant of the U.S. Air Force. His list of service to agriculture and his community is quite long, among it service as president of the Northern Electric Cooperative, director of the hospital board, and District 91 president of Associated Milk Producers. During his first six years on the Beef Board, Gary served on the Executive Committee and Operating Committee, as chair of the Information Committee, Dairy Producer Committee, and Youth Education Committee, and as a member of the Administration Subcommittee, and the Issues Management, Market Research and Nominating committees. He also is a past director of the South Dakota Beef Council, the South Dakota Agricultural & Rural Leadership Advisory Board, the South Dakota 4-H Foundation, and the Dairymen's Association of South Dakota, just to name a few.
