RE: Assessments on Cattle Held for More Than 10 Days
Please be aware that cattle purchased by any packer/processor are subject to a second checkoff assessment if those cattle are purchased and held longer than ten days prior to processing. This same rule applies to anyone who buys cattle and holds them longer than ten days.
Along those same lines, any packer/processor who owns cattle for more than ten days prior to processing must pay the dollar per head checkoff when the cattle are processed, even though no change of ownership occurs, per section 1260.172 (a) (2) of the Beef Promotion and Research Order.
“Any producer marketing cattle of that producer’s own production in the form of beef or beef products to consumers, either directly or through retail or wholesale outlets, or for export purposes, shall remit to a qualified State beef council or to the Board an assessment on such cattle at the rate of one dollar ($1) per head of cattle or the equivalent thereof. 1260.172 (a) (2)
If you have any questions, please contact your qualified state beef council or the Cattlemen’s Beef Board at (800)388-2333.
