Beef Ambassador Teaches Beef 101 to College Students

Suggested Lead: Jennifer Rassler, 2008 Beef Ambassador, grew up on a dairy farm in Kempton, Penn., where they milk 250 Holsteins, have replacement cows and farm 2,000 acres of corn, soybeans and hay. She is a sophomore at Penn State University studying Animal Science, where she also puts her Beef Ambassador efforts into action on a campus with over 40,000 students…tape

Cut #1                :32                   O.C..."and some recipes."

Rassler spends the majority of her time in the northeast region where consumers outnumber beef animals. She reflects on how the Beef Ambassador program has helped her take a leadership role both on campus and at consumer events across the region…tape

Cut #2               :50                    O.C..."produce at home."

Another consumer outreach program started last year by Beef Ambassador Chris Molinaro, also from Penn State, is the “Meat In” day. Since then, Rassler has carried on the tradition of encouraging students to keep beef on their plates…tape.

Cut #3               :38                    O.C..."our positive message."

The Beef Ambassadors are highly active in the online community, posting regular blogs at www.raisingthesteaks.comwww.beefmatters.com and www.chewingthecud.com. As part of the Ambassador program, Rassler also filmed her own video about her family’s farm in celebration of Earth Day and posted it on YouTube (search key words:  Earth Day on our farm).

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
