Suggested Lead:  This week, thousands of hoofs hit the road to Reno for the Cattle Industry Annual Convention where joint and individual meetings will be held by five industry organizations: National Cattlemen's Beef Association, Cattlemen's Beef Promotion & Research Board (CBB), American National CattleWomen, Inc., Cattle-Fax and the National Cattlemen's Foundation. Angie Olejnik (o-len-ick), CBB controller, notes that the convention is grassroots leadership at its best…tape

Cut #1                :14                    O.C...”the committees directed.”

The convention is also a great opportunity to learn more about the Beef Checkoff Program and all the projects and programs funded by the beef checkoff. Olejnik, CBB members and other volunteer leaders who oversee checkoff-funded programs will be meeting throughout the week. The resulting action items then direct where the producer’s dollar is invested and steps taken to ensure the checkoff is being administered properly…tape.

Cut #2               :17                      O.C...”be spent to.”

In addition to daily checks and balances at the CBB office, Olejnik also says there are safeguards in place at the state and contractor level...tape

Cut #3               :28                      O.C...”years as well.”

Producers can rest assured knowing their voice can be heard and their investment is protected. It all begins this week in Reno. For up-to-date convention information, be sure to log onto the CBB blog at http://beefboardmeeting.com.

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.
